Aiguilles-en-Queyras is a charming mountain village in the Hautes Alpes region, built at the confluence of the Guil and Lombard rivers, opposite the Peynin valley (see the Queyras panorama).
Services include a medical center, the Queyras hospital and dispensary, and a pharmacy.
In addition to the supermarket, there is a small market on Thursdays, where you can buy fruit, vegetables, flowers, fish and more.
Aiguilles offers its visitors
- cross-country ski trails,
- its skating rink,
- ice waterfall,
- swimming pool,
- a winter ski area and a summer mountain bike area (see Haut Guil ski area map).
After the terrible fire of 1829, part of the population of Aiguilles-en-Queyras left to seek a better fortune in South America (Argentina, Chile).
Its architecture was strongly influenced by the return to the village of some of its inhabitants, having made their fortune.
There are some beautiful homes here, very different in style from those found in other Queyras villages.
The same is true of the town hall donated by the "Americans" on their return.
Aiguilles also boasts a metal house designed by Eiffel. The prototype of this house was exhibited at the 1895 World's Fair in Bordeaux.
The Chabataron ski lift was finally shut down in 1969.
It is now on display at the bottom of the village of Aiguilles for our enjoyment.
From Aiguilles, numerous mountain hikes will take you into the Queyras Natural Park, to deep-water lakes such as the Malrif lakes, to passes offering breathtaking views, to towering peaks offering views of the whole of the Hautes Alpes and, further afield, the Mont Blanc range.
One of the most beautiful leads to "Fond de Peynin", beyond the hamlet of Peynin.
